Regelia Tulip

Regelia Tulip is one of the most original of all Kazakh tulips described in 1887 by A.Krasnov on the collections from the Chu-lli mountains. It grows on screes, stony slopes and rocky protrusions, in arid and hot habitats. This is related to the amazing structure of its single leaf the surface of which is covered with a dense network of parallel crest-like outgrowths resembling a springy corrugated tissue. This device protects the sheet from severe overheating and excessive evaporation. The ancient relict species which natural habitat stretches across the whole range of the Chu-lli mountains - from the valley of the river Kurty in the south - to the mountain Dzhambul in the north. It blossoms very early, in late March - early April. The flowers are small, white, slightly purple on the back. It propagates itself by seeds. The number is reduced under the influence of grazing as sheep in the mass eats unripe fruits. The average density in the grazing areas is 3-6 individuals per square meter, in undisturbed habitats -14-27 individuals. There are no protected territories within the natural habitat of this species.
