Bema Tulip

Bema Tulip (T.behmiana) is described in 1880 from the vicinity of the village of Hi (now Kapshagai). The endemic of Kazakhstan is found in the southern Balkhash region; it enters the Eastern Betpakdala and the Northern Moyynkum. It grows in sandy and stony sandy deserts.

A characteristic feature of it is the scales of the bulb that are long, reaching the surface of the soil and which surround the underground part of the stem in a dense cover. This is an adaptation to the hot arid conditions of the desert.

Stem is strong, up to 40 cm high, leaves usually 4, gray wavy along the edge. The flower is yellow gracefully elongated sometimes with a reddish tint on the back of the outer petals. It blossoms in the middle of April - beginning of May.

In our region there are occasionally two more similar species of Tulipa lehmanniana Merckl. And Tulipa borszczowii Regel with yellow and red flowers. Their main difference is the presence of a large black spot in the lower part of the petals, which is visible from the inside. Some experts unite Lehmann Tulip (Tulipa lehmanniana Merckl.) and Borschov Tulip (Tulipa borszczowii Regel) in one form. Sometimes there are hybrid populations.
